Settle in with your favorite beverage and check out what everyone’s buzzing about. Your future leadership self will thank you.Â
This month, we turn to the profound wisdom of systems thinker Russell Ackoff, who once said, “It is better to do the right thing wrong than to do the wrong thing right.” But what does it mean in practice?Â
Ackoff’s insight highlights the importance of aiming for the right goals, even if the execution isn’t flawless. It’s a challenge to prioritize outcomes over optics. Many organizations focus on optimizing processes for the sake of efficiency, yet if those processes are leading to a flawed destination, you’re just speeding toward disaster.Â
Here’s an example for leaders and managers to chew on: Imagine a company struggling to improve customer satisfaction. Instead of fixing underlying issues, such as product quality or delivery mishaps, it overhauls its call center to respond quicker to complaints. This “wrong thing right” approach might polish the numbers but doesn’t solve the core problem causing dissatisfaction.Â
On the flip side, suppose a team launches a pilot program to genuinely address customer pain points, but the rollout stumbles with delays or technical glitches. Though imperfect, this effort ties directly to the right goal of creating customer value. Over time, refining this strategy will yield better long-term results than simply perfecting broken systems.Â
For practitioners, Ackoff’s words are a reminder to think systemically. Before smoothing out rough edges, ask yourself, “Am I working on what truly matters?” The answer makes all the difference.Â
What if solving complex problems could be as simple as following a recipe? Well, that’s the idea behind Pattern Language, a concept first introduced by architect Christopher Alexander in A Pattern Language (1977). But this isn’t about baking cakes or assembling IKEA furniture; it’s about creating systems that are thoughtful, cohesive, and designed to make life better for the people who use them.Â
At its heart, a pattern language is a network of interrelated patterns. Each pattern identifies a recurring problem in design and offers a reliable solution. Think of it as a toolbox where every tool is carefully labeled for a specific job. Originally developed to rethink architecture, these patterns have expanded their influence far beyond bricks and mortar. Now, they’re being used to improve software development, team dynamics, and even strategic planning.Â
Here’s the genius of it all: these aren’t cookie-cutter solutions. Pattern Language is more like a jazz improvisation than a rigid script. Alexander’s vision was to empower people—not just professionals, but communities and individuals—to use these flexible guidelines to solve problems in ways that fit their unique context. Want to transform a neglected park into a vibrant community hub? There’s a pattern that can help. Need to design software that actually understands its users? Yep, there’s a pattern for that too.Â
But how does it work? The process starts with large patterns (say, designing a neighborhood) and works downward to smaller patterns (like how to create a cozy alcove in a living room). Patterns are interconnected, meaning each one supports and completes the others, forming a cohesive whole. This isn’t just engineering; it’s building with empathy.Â
What’s truly fascinating is how Pattern Language feels alive. Each pattern behaves like a hypothesis, evolving as it gets tested in real-world scenarios. And that evolution enriches the language, allowing it to adapt to new challenges.Â
Why Use Pattern Language? Here’s why it deserves a second look in systems thinking and beyond:Â
If you’re ready to think systemically and design with purpose, Pattern Language might just be your new favorite tool. Go ahead, give it a try. After all, it’s a language anyone can learn to speak.Â
